Foliage Cold Weather Boot Sock

The Size:
This sock will fit an average adult foot between women's shoe sizes 7 and 9; 1 more skein of yarn may be needed for larger feet or longer calf lengths.

The Materials:
Foliage by Berroco, 3 skeins
US size 7 double pointed needle

The Model Shown in:
Foliage 5971 (disc'd color)

The Gauge:
7 stitches/inch in knit 1, purl 1 rib stitch

The Knitting:
Calf: Using size 7 needles, cast on 44 stitches and divide between three needles (11, 22, 11) sts. Join and work around in knit 1, purl 1 ribbing for about 8 1/2 inches (or desired calf length). End after working the stitches on needle No. 3.

Heel: Knit the stitches from needle No. 1 onto needle No. 3. Proceed to work back and forth across these 22 stitches for the heel as follows:

Row 1: Slip 1 st as if to purl, purl to end. Row 2: *Slip 1 st as if to purl, knit 1, repeat from* to end.

Repeat these two rows until heel measures about two inches. End with a knit row. Turn the heel using short rows as follows:

Row 1: Purl 12, p2 tog, p1, turn work
Row 2: Slip 1 as if to purl, knit 3, SSK, k1, turn work
Row 3: Slip 1, purl 4, p2 tog, p1, turn work
Row 4: Slip 1, knit 5, SSK, k1, turn work
Row 5: Slip 1, purl 6, p2 tog, p1, turn work

Continue working in this manner until all stitches have been worked. The last row worked should be a knit row (12 stitches).

Gusset/Instep: Using a spare needle, pick up and knit 11 stitches on the left side of the heel. Work evenly in rib pattern across the foot stitches on needle No. 2. With another needle, pick up and knit 11 stitches across the right side of the heel and knit six stitches off the needle. Place the remaining six heel stitches on the first needle used to pick up and knit (needle No. 1). (17, 22, 17) sts. Shape instep gusset as follows:

Round 1: Knit to last 3 stitches on needle No. 1, k2 tog, k1. Work rib across needle No. 2. On needle No. 3, k1, SSK, knit to end. Round 2: Knit

Repeat these two rounds until 44 stitches remain (11, 22, 11) sts. Continue to work evenly (st st on #1, rib on #2, st st on #3) until the foot measures about 2 inches less than desired foot length; the best way to check the length is to try the sock on now while it's on the needles.

Toe: Round 1: Knit to last 3 stitches on needle No. 1, k2 tog, k1. On needle No. 2, k1, SSK, knit to last 3 stitches, k2 tog, k1. On needle No. 3, k1, SSK, knit to end.
Round 2: Knit.

Repeat these two rounds until 24 stitches remain, then repeat Round 1 only until 12 stitches remain. Knit the stitches from needle No. 1 onto needle No. 3. Graft the toe stitches together using the kitchener stitch.
