The Size:
21" circumference, 8.5" tall
The Materials:
1 skein Berroco Borealis 5016 Grindvik
Set of 5 US size 11 dp needles
Stitch marker
The Gauge:
3.5 sts and 3 rows = 1 inch in stockinette stitch
The Definitions:
K2tog = knit 2 stitches together
Yo = yarn over
SSK = Slip 2 stitches knitwise one at a time. Insert point of left needle into the fronts of the two slipped stitches
and knit them together.
KFB = knit into the front and the back of stitch
PM = place marker
The Knitting:
Cast on 12 stitches. [NOTE: if you would like a seamless brim, cast on 12 stitches provisionally].
Purl one row.
Row 1 (RS): K1, k2tog, k8, *insert left-hand needle (from front to back) into the left side loop of the stitch in the
row below the first stitch on the right-hand needle; draw this loop slightly up,* and knit into the back of it, k1.
Row 2: Purl all stitches.
Repeat Rows 1 & 2 until strip measures 21". Bind off all stitches and sew this edge to cast on edge [or,
if you have cast on provisionally, unzip provisional cast-on and graft these live stitches together].
With RS of brim facing at the increase edge, pick up and knit 60 stitches. Place marker to indicate beginning of round
and knit until hat measures 6" from bottom edge of brim.
Round 1: *k8, ssk, rep from * to end of round. 54 sts.
Round 2 and all remaining even rounds: knit.
Round 3: *k7, ssk, rep from * to end of round. 48 sts.
Round 5: *k6, ssk, rep from * to end of round. 42sts.
Round 7: *k5, ssk, rep from * to end of round. 36 sts.
Round 9: *k4, ssk, rep from * to end of round. 30 sts
Round 11: *k3, ssk, rep from * to end of round. 24 sts.
Round 13: *k2, ssk, rep from * to end of round. 18 sts.
Round 15: *k1, ssk, rep from * to end of round. 12 sts.
Round 17: *ssk* rep from * to end of round. 6 sts
Cut yarn leaving an 8" tail. Thread onto tapestry needle and draw through remaining 6 sts. Tighten to close and weave in end.
Flower
Cast on 6 sts. Purl one row.
Row 1 (RS): K1, k2tog, k2, **insert left-hand needle (from front to back) into the left side loop of the stitch in the
row below the first stitch on the right-hand needle; draw this loop slightly up,* and knit into the back of it, k1.
Row 2: Purl all stitches.
Rep until you are almost out of yarn, ending on a WS row. K2tog 3 times and bo all sts on next row. Wind strip into a
flower shape and sew down to side of hat using sewing thread.

The Knitting:
Cast on 54 stitches.
Row 1: k1, *KFB, k7, K2tog, (pm) k1, Yo, K2tog, k1 (pm), SSK, k7, KFB*, (pm) k1, Yo, k2tog, k1 (pm), repeat * to *, end k1.
Row 2: purl
Work two row pattern repeat until 29" or about two feet of yarn remains. End with Row 1. Bind off in purl. Fold in half
matching cast on edge to bound off edge, seam.
